Sein bekanntestes Lied ist Auld Lang Syne, das inzwischen Teil der britischen Tradition geworden ist. Burns, der auch Werke in seinem Heimatdialekt Scots verfasste, gilt neben Walter Scott als größter schottischer Dichter.
