Joseph Weigl (28 March 1766 – 3 February 1846), was an Austrian composer and conductor, born in Eisenstadt, Hungary, Austrian Empire. The son of Joseph Franz Weigl (1740–1820), the principal cellist in the orchestra of the Esterházy family, he studied music under Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and Antonio Salieri. He became Kapellmeister at the court theatre in Vienna in 1792, and from 1827 to 1838 was vice-Kapellmeister of the court. He died in Vienna.

Era hijo de Joseph Franz Weigl (1740–1820), el principal cellista de la orquesta de la familia Esterházy. Joseph Weigl estudió música con eminentes profesores, entre ellos Johann Georg Albrechtsberger y Antonio Salieri. En 1792 fue nombrado Kapellmeister del teatro de la corte en Viena. Entre 1827 y 1838 fue vice-Kapellmeister de la corte imperial. Compuso más de 30 óperas, tanto en italiano como en alemán, 18 ballets, música incidental, música sacra, 11 misas y cantatas. Una de sus obras más conocidas es la ópera Die Schweizerfamilie. (es)

  • Studiò a Vienna e fu allievo sia di Johann Georg Albrechtsberger che di Antonio Salieri. Fu compositore assai precoce, tanto che una sua opera (Die betrogene Arglist), scritta quando aveva appena 17 anni, attirò l'attenzione di Salieri, compositore di corte, che gli fece avere nel 1791 l'incarico di sostituto direttore dell'orchestra di corte. Compose circa 30 lavori teatrali caratterizzati da una feconda vena melodica, tanto che le arie e le melodie estratte dalle sue opere divennero molto popolari nei salotti dell'epoca e furono utilizzate da altri compositori come spunto per delle variazioni.Oggi Weigl è conosciuto principalmente per la sua opera Die Schweizer Familie (La famiglia svizzera, 14 marzo 1809) che nella prima assoluta al Theater am Kärntnertor di Vienna ha visto la partecipa (it)
