Benjamin Louis Paul Godard (18 August 1849 – 10 January 1895) was a French violinist and Romantic-era composer of Jewish extraction. Godard composed eight operas, five symphonies, two piano and two violin concertos, string quartets, sonatas for violin and piano, piano pieces and etudes, and more than a hundred songs. He died at the age of 45 in Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes) of tuberculosis and was buried in the family tomb in Taverny in the French department of Val-d'Oise

Ingresó en el Conservatorio de París, estudiando el violín con Richard Hammer y Henri Vieuxtemps. Aprendió composición con Henri Rober. En 1887, obtuvo la plaza de profesor del Conservatorio de París. Su obra maestra, "Jocelyn", según un poema de Alphonse de Lamartine, es hoy recordada por su célebre Berceuse, que muestra lo mejor del talento lírico del compositor. Otra ópera, Le Dante et Béatrice, fue representada en la Ópera Cómica de París el 13 de mayo de 1890. (es)
