Lee Konitz (born October 13, 1927) is an American composer and alto saxophonist. He has performed successfully in a wide range of jazz styles, including bebop, cool jazz and avant-garde jazz. Konitz's association with the cool jazz movement of the 1940s and 1950s includes participation in Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions, and his work with pianist Lennie Tristano. He was notable during this era as one of relatively few alto saxophonists to retain a distinctive style when Charlie Parker exerted a massive influence.

Auf seinem Hauptinstrument, dem Altsaxophon, stellte er am Ende der 1940er Jahre den einzigen originären Beitrag neben Charlie Parker dar und zugleich beginnend mit seiner ersten Einspielung von Subconscious-Lee „den wichtigsten neuen Einfluss nach diesem“. In seiner motivischen Arbeit erreichte die Soloimprovisation Martin Kunzler zufolge „einen ästhetischen und inhaltlichen Höhepunkt.“ Mit seiner linearen Spielhaltung prägte der neben Lennie Tristano „bedeutendste Cool-Innovator“ Musiker wie Paul Desmond oder Bill Evans ebenso wie Hans Koller und Albert Mangelsdorff und schließlich sogar Avantgardisten wie Anthony Braxton. Znany ze współpracy z takimi muzykami jak Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan czy Elvin Jones. W 1949 nagrał z Milesem Davisem epokowy album Birth of the Cool, współpracował z Gilem Evansem, Lenniem Tristano i do dziś jest aktywnym i twórczym muzykiem.
