Hij won Academy Awards voor zijn muziek voor Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) en A Passage to India (1984). Jarre schreef vooral voor orkest, maar vanaf de jaren tachtig kreeg ook synthesizermuziek zijn belangstelling.
