Fue el único hijo de Harry A. Bull (editor en jefe de la revista Town & Country) y de Daphne van Beuren Bayne (1916-2002), rica heredera de un banquero, de Nueva Jersey, que se hizo conocida como arpista de jazz bajo el seudónimo Daphne Hellman.
