Sir Harold Malcolm Watts Sargent (29 April 1895 – 3 October 1967) was an English conductor, organist and composer widely regarded as Britain's leading conductor of choral works. The musical ensembles with which he was associated included the Ballets Russes, the Huddersfield Choral Society, the Royal Choral Society, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, and the London Philharmonic, Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic orchestras. Sargent studierte Klavier und Orgel und wurde 1911 Assistent des Organisten Haydn Keeton an der Kathedrale von Peterborough. Von 1914 bis 1924 war er Organist in Melton Mowbray. Zugleich studierte er in Durham Musikwissenschaft und von 1919 bis 1921 Klavier bei Benno Moiseiwitsch. Seine Laufbahn als Dirigent begann, als er 1921 auf Einladung von Sir Henry Wood die Promenadenkonzerte von Queen’s Hall in London dirigierte. (de)
