Franz Mazura (born 22 April 1924 in Salzburg) is an Austrian bass-baritone opera singer and actor. He was made a Kammersänger in 1980 and an Honorary Member of the National Theater of Mannheim in 1990. He most often plays villains and strange characters. Mazura appears on two Grammy Award winning recordings: as Dr. Schön in Lulu, conducted by Pierre Boulez (Best Opera Recording 1980) and as Moses in Moses und Aron, conducted by Sir Georg Solti (Best Opera Recording 1985).

  • Franz Mazura (* 22. April 1924 in Salzburg) ist ein österreichischer Opern- und Konzertsänger (Bassbariton). Er studierte bei Frederick Husler an der Musikhochschule Detmold und arbeitete bereits während seines Studiums als Schauspieler am Landestheater Detmold. Mazura debütierte 1949 in Kassel, sang dann in Mainz, Braunschweig und am Nationaltheater Mannheim und debütierte 1960 bei den Salzburger Festspielen, 1961 an der Deutschen Oper Berlin, 1971 bei den Bayreuther Festspielen, 1973 an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper, sang auch an der Bayerischen Staatsoper, an der Metropolitan Opera, an der Wiener Staatsoper, am Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires sowie an der Pariser Oper – dort u. a. 1976 in Wagners Das Rheingold unter Georg Solti und Peter Stein.
