Alexander Nikolayevich Tcherepnin (Russian: Алекса́ндр Никола́евич Черепни́н; 21 January 1899 – 29 September 1977) was a Russian-born composer and pianist. His father, Nikolai Tcherepnin (pupil of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov) was also a composer, as were his sons, Serge Tcherepnin and Ivan Tcherepnin and two of his grandsons (sons of Ivan), Sergei and Stefan. His son Serge was involved in the roots of electronic music and instruments. His mother was a member of the artistic Benois family, a niece of Alexandre Benois.

W 1921 roku przeniósł się do Paryża, gdzie ukończył studia muzyczne u Ivana Philipe'a (fortepian) i Paula Vidala (kompozycja). W latach 1934–1937 odbył 2 podróże do Chin i Japonii. W latach 1949–1969 profesor De Paul University w Chicago. Początkowo pod wpływem muzyki Siergieja Prokofjewa i Siergieja Rachmaninowa, stworzył własny system modalny i oryginalną 9-stopniową skalę muzyczną. Stworzył utwory na orkiestrę (4 symfonie, suity, koncerty, m.in. 6 fortepianowych, na harmonijkę ustną i orkiestrę), kameralne, fortepianowe, kantaty, pieśni chóralne i solowe, opery, balety (Ajanta's Frescoes, Londyn 1923).
