He became widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. Born to Jewish-Polish parents, his childhood was affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Besides Where the Wild Things Are, Sendak also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and illustrated many works by other authors including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik.

Zijn bekendste werk is het boek Where the Wild Things Are (1963). Het boek werd in Nederland uitgeven onder de titel Max en de Maximonsters. Sendak schreef en illustreerde ook een tekenfilmserie genaamd Bumble Ardy, gebaseerd op zijn eigen boek. Jim Henson deed daarbij de stem van Bumble Ardy. Sendak illustreerde verder de Kleine Beer-serie, geschreven door Else Holmelund Minarik. In 2003 won Sendak de Astrid Lindgrenprijs. (nl)
