Didier Lockwood (born 11 February 1956 in Calais) is a French jazz violinist. He played in the progressive rock/jazz fusion band Magma in the 1970s and is known for his use of electric amplification and experimentation on different sounds on the electric violin. In 1979, he released his first album as a leader, New World, and has recorded more than 20 albums of his own since then. In 1994, Lockwood moved to New York City for 2 years. During that time he recorded 2 albums "New York Rendez Vous" and "Storyboard"

Studiował muzykę poważną, ale porzucił konserwatorium w Calais w 1972, żeby założyć grupę progresywnego rocka wraz ze swoim bratem Francisem, grającym na fortepianie. Zespół istniał 3 lata. Później Lockwood występował m.in. ze Stéphane'em Grappellim, a w 1985 z Michałem Urbaniakiem. Występował też i nagrywał z takimi jazzmenami, jak m.in. Tony Williams, Jan Hammer, Philip Catherine, Dave Holland, Mike Stern, Peter Erskine, czy Biréli Lagrène. Gra Lockwooda nawiązuje do gry takich skrzypków jazzowych, jak Stéphane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty i Zbigniew Seifert. W 2001 Lockwood we Francji założył szkołę improwizacji jazzowej na instrumentach strunowych. (pl)

  • Nato a Calais, dove ha studiato violino classico e composizione al conservatorio, si è interessato ben presto al rock and roll e, nel 1972 ha lasciato gli studi classici per formare un gruppo di rock progressive, i Magma, assieme a suo fratello Francis, pianista. I due fratelli suonano assieme per tre anni ma Didier si lascia affascinare dalle improvvisazioni di Jean-Luc Ponty nel disco Kink Kong Album di Frank Zappa e la sua musica è influenzata da Stéphane Grappelli con cui va a suonare in tour. Ha partecipato inoltre all'album Absolutely Live del gruppo fusion canadese Uzeb. (it)
