Paolo Francesco Lorenzani (5 January 1640 – 28 October 1713) was an Italian composer of the Baroque Era. While living in France, he helped promote appreciation for the Italian style of music. Lorenzani was born in Rome and was trained by Orazio Benevoli, maestro di cappella for the Cappella Giulia in The Vatican. He served in Rome as maestro di cappella at the Church of the Gesù and Collegio Romano, the first Jesuit university, which later expanded to become Pontifical Gregorian University. He later served at the cathedral of Messina in Sicily.

Avec Jean-Baptiste Lully, ce compositeur était l'un des musiciens italiens les plus importants sous le règne de Louis XIV.   • Studiò musica sotto la guida di Orazio Benevoli e in breve tempo raggiunse una certa notorietà come musicista. Tra i suoi primi incarichi vi fu quello di maestro di cappella del Collegio Romano e della Cattedrale di Messina. Nel 1678 si trasferì a Parigi, dove venne accolto con entusiasmo da Luigi XIV e dalla sua corte. Le cronache narrano che nella capitale francese entrò in competizione con Jean-Baptiste Lully, e in disaccordo con quest'ultimo cercò di riportare in auge la musica italiana che Lulli aveva fatto escludere dalle scalette reali. Dopo qualche anno il successo parigino iniziò a scemare e quindi decise di rientrare in Italia. Nel 1694 assunse la direzione della Cappella Giulia a Roma. Tra le sue composizioni, annoveriamo: mottetti, arie, cantate, pastorali, opere francesi. (it)
