Uuno (Kalervo) Klami (20 September 1900 – 29 May 1961) was a Finnish composer. He was born in Virolahti. Many of his works are related to the Kalevala. He was influenced by French and Spanish music, and especially by Maurice Ravel, for whom he had a particular esteem. He participated in five armed conflicts, including two wars in Karelia, the Finnish Civil War, the Winter War of 1939-40 and the Continuation War of 1941-44.

  • Uuno Klami, die al op vierjarige leeftijd zijn vader verloor, volgde zijn muziekopleiding aanvankelijk in Helsinki, waar Erkki Melartin zijn leermeester was. In 1924-1925 studeerde hij in Parijs, waar hij onder meer lessen volgde bij Ravel en zijn pianoconcert Une nuit à Montmartre schreef. In 1928-1929 vervolgde hij zijn opleiding in Wenen bij Hans Gál. Rond 1930 begon hij als componist naam te maken. Zijn bekendste werk, de Kalavala-suite (Kalevala-sarja), kwam in 1932 tot stand. In dat jaar trad hij als muziekrecensent in dienst van het dagblad Helsingin Sanomat, waaraan hij tot 1959 verbonden zou blijven. Uit deze periode dateren ook werken als de Tsjeremissische fantasie voor cello en orkest (1931) en de suite Zeebeelden (Merikuvia, 1932; Klami's geboorteplaats lag aan zee). (nl)
