Estudió piano y composición, con Anton Bruckner, en la Universidad de Música y Arte Dramático de Viena y ganó la medalla de oro de la institución. Entre los reconocimientos que recibió, fue nombrado Caballero de la Orden de Dannebrog de Dinamarca, y en 1916, recibió la Medalla de Oro de la Royal Philharmonic Society. (es)

Il n'a laissé que quelques enregistrements mais il était, à l'époque, très réputé pour sa poésie au piano, tout particulièrement dans Chopin. Pachmann fez seus estudos musicais em Viena, apresentou seu primeiro recital em sua cidade natal em 1869,e, insatisfeito com sua performance, voltou a dedicar-se aos estudos com obstinação, sendo que sua volta aos palcos deu-se somente em 1882.Viajou por vários países da Europa e foi até os Estados Unidos, ganhando reconhecimento por sua arte.
