Jego ojcem był Christian Ferdinand Abel, syn Clamora Heinricha.Carl w Lipsku był uczniem Jana Sebastiana Bacha. W latach 1748-1758 członek orkiestry nadwornej w Dreźnie. Od 1759 nadworny muzyk (później dyrektor) w nadwornej orkiestrze kameralnej królowej w Londynie. Wraz z Johannem Christianem Bachem między 1765 a 1772 prowadził pierwsze publiczne koncerty w Londynie, które nazywano Bach-Abel-Concerts. Autor 27 dzieł muzycznych (symfonii, uwertur, koncertów fortepianowych, kwartetów smyczkowych, sonat i in.), odznaczających się doskonałą melodyką i za jego życia bardzo cenionych. Grande violista da gamba, compose opere importanti per questo strumento. Abel nacque a Köthen, figlio di Christian Ferdinand Abel, il principale violista da gamba e violoncellista nell'orchestra di corte di Johann Sebastian Bach. Non è provato che avesse compiuto gli studi alla Thomasschule di Lipsia, ma su consiglio di Bach, nel 1748, entrò nell'orchestra di corte di Johann Adolph Hasse a Dresda, dove rimase per dieci anni. Nel 1759 andò in Inghilterra e divenne musicista da camera della Regina Carlotta.
