Romitelli studierte Komposition am Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Mailand und besuchte anschließend Kurse an der Accademia Chigiana di Siena bei Franco Donatoni und der Scuola Civica di Milano. 1991 ging er nach Paris, wo er Schüler von Hugues Dufourt und Gérard Grisey war und Studien am IRCAM betrieb, wo er von 1993 bis 1995 compositeur en recherche war. Sus obras han sido interpretadas en festivales tales como el Festival d’Automne (Paris), Ultima Helsinki, Steirischen Herbst (Graz), Venice Biennale y el Darmstädter Ferienkurse. Su opera An Index of Metals (2003) ganó el Premio Franco Abbiati en el año 2004. Murió el año 2004, a los 41 años de edad, de cáncer. (es)
