Salvatore Cardillo (1874–1947) was an Italian-American composer. Born in Naples, he studied piano and composition in Italy before emigrating in 1903 to the United States as a university graduate. His career encompassed songwriting and movie music. He died in New York. The composer also wrote the songs Barcarola, to a text by Edoardo San Giovanni, and Oi luna (O Silvery Moon), to a text by Riccardo Cordiferro. These were published in 1921 as "Two Neapolitan Songs" by G. Schirmer Inc. in New York.

La chanson a été par la suite enregistrée par de nombreux ténors tels Tito Schipa, Benjamino Gigli, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Corelli, Carlo Bergonzi, Domingo, Alfredo Krauss, José Carreras, ou Pavarotti. Tra i suoi lavori spicca la celebre canzone napoletana Core 'ngrato, composta sopra un testo scritto nel 1911 da Alessandro Sisca (detto Cordiferro): capace di esprimere in musica la tormentata sofferenza degli emigrati, conseguente alla lontananza dall'Italia, la canzone ebbe un grande successo, che perdura tuttora. In una lettera alla cugina Wanda, riferendosi a Core 'ngrato, Cardillo scrisse: Non è però chiaro a quali canzoni vere alluda. (it)
