Leo Sirota (May 4, 1885 - February 25, 1965) was a Jewish pianist born in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Podolskaya Guberniya, Russian Empire, now Ukraine. Leo Sirota began studying piano at the age of five. By the age of nine he was already giving concerts and came to the attention of Paderewski, who invited the boy to study with him. Sirota's parents, however, felt he was too young, and so he attended the conservatories in Kiev and, later, Saint Petersburg. However, in 1904 he went to Vienna to study with Ferruccio Busoni. Sirota died in 1965. His daughter was Beate Sirota Gordon.

  • 5歳でピアノを始め、9歳までに演奏活動を行なってイグナツィ・ヤン・パデレフスキの注目を浴び、自分の門人になるようにと招かれた。しかしながら両親が、息子は幼すぎるためにそれに相応しくないと判断したため、当初はキエフ音楽院に、その後はペテルブルク音楽院に学んだ。それでも1904年になるとウィーンに留学してフェルッチョ・ブゾーニに師事することができた。 指揮者ヤッシャ・ホーレンシュタインのコレペティトールを務めたことが縁となり、その妹と結婚した。ウィーンでのデビューは、モーツァルトによる2台ピアノのためのソナタ（ブゾーニとの共演）に始まり、（作曲者自身の指揮による）ブゾーニの《ピアノ協奏曲》が続いた後、リストの《ドン・ジョヴァンニ幻想曲》で締め括られた。 1929年に来日してから15年間日本に留まり、演奏家ならびに教育者として活動を続けた。シロタに直接学んだ弟子には永井進、園田高弘、藤田晴子、田中園子、豊増昇、アナトリー・ヴェデルニコフ、松谷穣がいる。第二次世界大戦後に渡米して、セントルイスで教鞭を執り、地元の放送局の要望に応えて数々の音源を遺した。 (ja)
