Les Variations Goldberg se composent d'une aria en sol majeur , empruntée au second Klavierbüchlein que Bach composa pour sa femme Anna Magdalena en 1725. L'aria sert de point de départ aux trente variations qui suivent.. Elles forment la quatrième partie du Klavierübung. Elles furent commandées à Bach par le comte von Keyserling, ex-ambassadeur de Russie auprès de la cour de Saxe et composées à Nuremberg en 1741. Elles portent le nom du claveciniste Goldberg qui les jouait pour le commanditaire. (fr)
